Today was the first big event for the Connections Mural Project. Thanks to all who came and I hope to see the rest of you soon. We had a great time today and the mural is really coming along.
All the pieces of the mural started just like this one, waiting to be transformed. Soon the students arrived and were able to help create bits and pieces to get us on our way.
And, of course, we had a lot of help from local muralist Greta, who spent time all over the place helping everywhere she could, working with the kids. Dr. Ronald Salazar, the principal of Folwell School, also joined in the fun, painting alongside the kids.
Best of all, we had some live music to help us along. We can’t say that they will be at every event, but I know I would love to see more from these Folwell musicians in the future!
By the end of the day, things were really starting to come together. There can be no doubt that this project has come out of the gate running. The Folwell and Corcoran community is extremely supportive of this project and is participating every chance they get.
Thank you so much to every one who came today–we can’t wait to see you at the next event!

Over the next couple of months, with the help of SENA, Minneapolis Public Schools, The Minnesota State Arts Board, and Corcoran Neighborhood Organization, a mural will be painted on the side of Folwell School, Performing Arts Magnet. Though this may sound like a simple act, the mural will be much more important than just a new piece of public art; it will be a piece of community art. The goal of this mural is to bring people together. The students of Folwell School, facilitated by local artist Greta McLain, and in conjunction with members of the Folwell community, will participate in creating the mural on a weekly basis.
In addition to the Connections Mural project at Folwell, there will be community paint party events hosted in different locations around Minneapolis where people in the community will be welcomed to come and help create something that everyone can appreciate. This project will help foster community and camaraderie between neighbors, acquaintances, and the people who work and learn at Folwell School.
This blog will catalog events that occur in relation to the project and will serve as a guide for those who wish to follow or get involved with this new and exciting project. Thank you for your support, and we look forward to seeing you at an event in the near future!
